Well, yes, I was, but that wasn't the problem. I had used epoxy to put it together after shortening it. Perhaps soaking the cage the other day wasn't such a good idea, as the glue let loose. I was in the shower, and next thing I knew, the cage separated at the glue line. Oops.
I've re-glued it, and it's drying now. We'll see how this iteration holds up.
